Web Design Do's and Don'ts

DO's

bulletMake the site work!  Make sure all linked pages are connected and that the content for all pages displays.
bulletDesign your site for your customers and prospects.
bulletNavigation should be simple.  Have links to your most important pages on every page at the top, side or bottom.
bulletYour contact information should never be more than 2 clicks away.  Contact information should contain contact name, address, phone, and email.
bulletEstablish a theme, and stick to it.  That would include background colors, font colors and sizes.
bulletUse dates where appropriate, such as in Press Releases or statistical reports.
bulletYour home page should be "index.htm".  This is the universal default.  Specifically, if a surfer types in "www.ominski.com" the server will return "www.ominski.com/index.htm"

Don'ts

bulletDon't use offensive background colors like black, red, or purple.
bulletDon't assume that all visitors have a Pentium 3- 900Mhz machine with a T3 connection.
bulletDon't put a lot of animations or pictures on one page.  They take a long time to download, and a lot of visitors are not going to wait excessively.
bulletDon't create a dead end page.  You want to provide "directions" for your visitors.  Think of it this way.  After a customer or prospect reads a page, where do you want them to go next?  Put the link right there.
bulletDon't require a visitor to request information by forms only.  If you use forms, make sure that visitors can also email or call you.  If a visitor has a question, wants to provide their address and phone number, and/or marital status, simply let them email or call you.  Why require them to fill out an aggravating form that serves your purpose rather than that of the visitor.
bulletDon't put too much information on one page.
bulletDon't have outdated information on your site.  Why would you want to have a page on your web site to register for a workshop that happened last year!?!
bulletDon't say "Click Here".
