Backups

Remember, there are only two kinds of organizations in the world, those that have had a critical loss of data and those that will.

Doing a backup should be as simple as a COPY and PASTE.  Here is how I handle backups.

1.  I create a folder in my C:\.  Mine is called 1ominksi, path being C:\1ominski.  The reason I put the one in front is this will be the first file found alphabetically under the C:\ making it easy to find.

2.  I then create sub folders in C:\1ominski.  Specifically, some of my sub folders are:

c:\1ominski\personal

c:\1ominski\customers

c:\1ominski\databases

c:\1ominski\letters

c:\1ominski\marketing

c:\1ominski\etc.

3.  I then copy the folder C:\1ominski and paste it to an external hard drive.

4.  That hard drive then goes offsite, as it would do me no good should my office burn to the ground taking with it my computers as well as backups.

Virus Protection

Virus protection is every bit as critical as backing up data.  Personally, I receive a virus every week, and Norton has yet to let one infect my computer.  However, many people do not download the most recent virus definitions from their provider (Norton, McAfee).  If a new virus is created today, and your last virus definition update was last week, you will not be protected from today’s virus.  I update my virus protection definitions daily, and I would suggest this to everyone.
