Tech Tips #8

Highlighting / Selecting text and scrolling: When you hold down the mouse button to select text that goes beyond the visible window, it is impossible to stop the scrolling at the point desired.  As soon as you drag the mouse below or above the visible window, the scrolling approaches the speed of light.  The solution is to click the mouse at the point you wish to start the selection.  Then, find the end point, and hold down the shift key, and click the mouse.  The desired text is now selected.

Printing only highlighted / selected text:  Whether you are in Word, on the Web, using Excel, etc., did you know that you can highlight / select text, and print only the highlighted / selected text?  First, highlight / select the text. Go to "FILE", from the drop down menu, select "PRINT", and in Page Range, hit the radio button "Selection".  Click "PRINT", and only the selected text will print.  I find this extremely helpful when I want to print just part of a web page.

Internet Explorer and URLs:
Did you know that you do not have to type in the entire URL of a website for Internet Explorer to take you there?  A proper URL would be “http://www.ominski.com”.  With Internet Explorer, all you need to type is “www.ominski.com”.  Even better, if you type “ominski” and hold down the Ctrl Key and hit enter, Internet explorer will take care of the rest.

1.  For those that have requested to be removed from this Listserv (who will not be reading this because they have been removed).

First some statistics.  There were originally 922 members on this listserv that have received anywhere from a minimum of two notes to those that have received 5 or more.

As you know, there is a notice in every message stating if you don’t want to be a part of this Listserv, just let me know and you will be removed immediately.  To date, 16 people have requested to be removed.  Some suggestions for consideration:

A poor way to request removal:

“REMOVE ME IMMEDIATELY FROM THIS LIST YOU SLIMEY WEASEL!!
Diamonds Are Us, Inc.”
The Diamonds Are Us Manager of Sales Prevention strikes again.

A good way to request to be removed:
“Please remove.”

The best way to request removal:
“High John,
Love your list.  I find everything you send incredibly brilliant.
Oh, yes, speaking of brilliant, I just got in some incredible diamonds and jewelry.
I see you are in Delaware County, and I am located conveniently near you.
Feel free to stop in and see me at the store anytime you are in the area.  I’d love to meet you.
Keep up the good work.

Then set your computer up to automatically block any more emails from me.

Then the next time I need to buy some jewelry, I’m going to Diamonds Are Us.  Also notice the signature in the above email.  Every email should contain a signature with appropriate contact information to make it easy for a prospect or customer to contact you.
